Sharing Your Culture Through Storytelling

Storytelling is a time-honored tradition passed down through generations through music, dance, art and words. And who else embodies the “storyteller” better than older adults who have a lifetime of experiences to share? What’s even more meaningful is the impact a story can have on others. It may warm a heart, provide comfort, drive understanding or build confidence for a new chapter in life.

“The longer I live, the more beautiful life becomes.” – Frank Lloyd Wright

Sharing authentic experiences from your patients, residents, and team members is a powerful way to highlight your culture and let your local community get a glimpse of what it is like to heal, live or work for your organization.

There are many ways you can include storytelling in your marketing strategy. When crafting a narrative, consider the following:

Is the tone accurate and respectful?

Older adults are often portrayed with outdated stereotypes, either as disconnected from modern life or with messaging that diminishes their vitality. Some campaigns use patronizing imagery. Instead, be sure that the tone of the content and imagery reflects your culture and is built on a deep understanding and respect for older adults.

Are you projecting the right image?

The common misconception is that moving into senior living signifies the end of independence. However, we know that older adults are often vibrant, active and full of life. Consider your setting and present the lifestyle in a positive light. Is there a resident who loves to garden and can share a few tips for planting season? Or a patient who can talk through their rehabilitation journey after surgery? These personal stories not only humanize your business but build trust with the community.

Are you getting the most out of your content?

When you are creating your plan, be sure to consider what else you could be getting out of the experience. If you plan to speak to the resident face to face, could you also record a video or take still photos? If the story includes a specific part of your community, like in the gardening example, could you film the story with the resident in the garden? Think about how the content will be used and if there are ways you can highlight other amenities or aspects of your culture in every story.
